Help! - Domain names

Custom domains let you host your portfolio with a URL like www.mywebsite.com. Because A Good Portfolio is a hosted solution, you don't need to worry about buying actual hosting, just the domain.

Setting up your www.yourwebsite.com to point to A Good Portfolio isn't tough, but it does require a little confidence. We're not able to support all of the issues that may crop up, simply because everywhere you buy your domain from is different. Ask a friend who's done this before if you're uncomfortable.

  1. First, you'll need to buy a domain from a registrar like GoDaddy, 1and1, or Register.com. This usually costs $10 or so bucks a year.
If it costs a lot more than that, find a different registrar.

  2. On your Customize page, fill in Your Custom Domain with the domain you intend to use, e.g. www.example.com

  3. Go to wherever you bought your domain name from, and add in a CNAME record, pointing to yoursubdomain.agoodportfolio.com.
Make sure to include that period (.) at the end!
If you're going for www.example.com, your CNAME record will probably look similar to the following:

    Type Name Value
    CNAME www yoursubdomain.agoodportfolio.com.

Sometimes it can take a little time to propogate throughout the internet – up to 72 hours. If you have any issues with it, seriously – ask a friend. And if not, give your registrar a little phone call and ask 'em to help you out.
